Discovering the Runes (for beginners)

The runes are a complex, archaic system of which the most widely used set (the Elder Futhark) comprises 24 sigils each with their own voice and energy. The energy is the rune; it can be channelled and identified by the shape, the name, and the sound but the energy of the rune, the core is what makes it unique.
Most people will associate the runes with divination, but they can also be used for working with magically (galdr) or for using as talismans. To successfully work with the runes for divination and galdr, it is important to experience their individual energies and get to know their history and meanings.

This one day workshop will introduce you to the runes and to examples of how others use them. It will introduce you to their history, and to some of the interpretations given to them. It will also teach you how to learn more about the runes, how to chant them, how to cast them, and how to read them. As part of this workshop, you will make your own set of runes, learning what kind of materials to use, and how to charge and energise your rune set.

Katie Gerrard has been studying the different forms of Norse magic, and working with the runes and the norse gods since the late 1990s. She is the author of Odin’s Gateways published by Avalonia Books.
